Naxxramas Guide to Success

The most challenging raid in pre-BC is back with vengeance. If you were a pre-BC toon as I am you will remember this legendary raid. One of a kind to say the least. Previously located in Eastern Plaguelands, Naxxramas now sits in the sky about Dragonblight. Besides its location change it also changed its style of instance. No longer is it the 40 man raid that was a horror to conduct. It now comfortably fits 10 and 25 man raids.

So some of you think that Naxx will be a joke in WoLK? Well leave your easysauce at home because it doesn't go well with Naxx. After getting some confidence and gear in Heroics, Naxx will be the Karazhan of WoLK. Let me ease the pain of those 50g repair bills and explain the Naxxramas Guide to group chemistry you want to look for when making a group.

Starting things off with the prerequisites of making a group in Naxx. Naxx, unlike Karazhan, will not fly with very few healers. I recommend 3 decent healers join you in these encounters. Reason being this raid is more complex then Karazhan, takes more time, and things will "pop up" and you need those quick heals. Next is a usual 2 tanks leaving the rest of the spots for dps. My personal key to a happy group is diversity. There are two reasons why: 1. Its better to mix and match abilities then have some repeat and there are "wasted" spots. 2. No fussing over the lewt. Simple as that.

The only other notes on 25 man to mention is that well, you have 25 people. Most bosses will now have adds, and the usual boost in health. Double your healers and tanks fill the rest with dps. Once you master 10 mans 25 mans (if geared) will seem simple.

For healers your requirements vary with how many healers you have, but I would suggest around 1200 spellpower and 250mp5 (3 healers). To be safe 1700 would be a better bet. Getting through some of these fights means you have to heal you butt off. Even in one encounter the raid is split in half! Making sure that you get good healers is your number one priority when doing Naxx.

As for tanks 20k unbuffed HP, 20K armor, defense 540 (crit immunity), and around 40-45% avoidance. Some of the encounters in Naxx hit with quite a punch. Not to mention a little spider named Maexxna =). Tanks will be your second priority when picking your group.

Last, but least in this case dps, melee 9% hit, puts out 1.5K, caster 17% hit, puts out 1.5K. To be safe with dps you should find 2K+. Dps I wouldn't say are unimportant, but the fact of the matter is they decided how fast the boss dies. Unless your trying to beat an enrage this has no major effect on your raid.

Florida is known in the United States as the Sunshine State. It's one of the few places in North America that enjoys warm, tropical climates and with a sunny ambience that comes from all the fairs and festivals that happen all year round. Aside from the regular yearly events that happen, there are also a few fledgling organizers that set up shows in their first year. Many people with the talent and skill can be found here, wanting to earn a little extra.

Of course, if you are one of these people, I wholeheartedly support your notion of selling the things that you love doing. However, you must make sure that once you have a booth, you are able to attract many potential customers. Below are some tips that I've learned from knowing some of the "fair regulars":

Spruce up your booth: Having fabulous craftworks is only half of the deal. You won't be attracting customers if all you do is spread them on a dull table. You're selling art. Make the booth attractive enough to catch would-be buyers' eyes from a distance. Something as simple as a colorful cloth to spread out your wares on or a banner on top of your booth will be a big thing. If you're selling food and beverages, a dumpster right next to you will certainly not help any. Make sure you clean up your area, too.

*Talk, but do not intimidate, your customers: Your crafts will simply not sell themselves. You have to make an effort to talk about your creations, telling them why you think it's special. But at the same time, do not flock them with information. Remain casual! And if you notice a potential customer having second doubts about what you are selling, then recommend a similar item that he or she may also consider.

Be prepared for ill weather: We may be the Sunshine State, but a tropical area also receives its fair share of rainfall. And if you've been in Florida long enough, you know that you will never be able to predict when it will drop. Have some thick plastic sheets ready to cover your crafts in the event of a rain, and have some heavy objects as well so they don't fly away. And do bring an umbrella for yourself as well! We don't want you sick, now.

Lastly, don't overdo it: Don't cram so much paraphernalia on your booth that your crafts get lost. Don't talk so much you forget to listen to your customers' concerns. And don't bring so much anti-rain equipment, you don't bring enough of what you're planning to sell. - 19955

All plants grown under conditions such as these should have their pots plunged inside a larger and waterproof pot with the space between the two packed with some moisture retentive material such as peat.

So if light intensity is high and summer temperatures equally high this poses problems as well as presenting advantages to the indoor plant lover. The recommended buoyant' atmosphere can be achieved by ensuring adequate ventilation and by selecting the right materials adequate light can be admitted through the curtained windows without subjecting plants to the scorching rays of the sun.

Alternatively plant pots can be stood on a tray or waterproof shelf, either plunged in peat again, or on a base of shingle or pea- sized pebbles. If this tray is kept constantly moist then the same beneficial results will be obtained.

However, we can, and indeed we should, spray all plants thoroughly at least once a day under these circumstances, keeping the fine moisture only off such delicate plants as saintpaulias, or preferably (since they do not require these special conditions) keep these delicate plants in the cooler and less lighted portions of the home. Aided by the fine film of moisture on their surfaces leaves will transpire at a lower rate than if too dry and the plants should not normally suffer.

But respiration rates are bound to be high, and unless spraying can be resorted to several times during a hot clay these rates will outstrip the speed with which plants can absorb moisture at their roots.

Most of us wish, of course, to have our home extensions or garden rooms looking more domesticated than a greenhouse, so if we resort to aids such as this we must hide or disguise the mechanism as much as we can, fortunately not a difficult task. - 19955

Airsoft guns are modelled after real firearms. Manufacturers go to great lengths to achieve this realistic look and feel, from the gun proportions to its outer designs. Other gun developers, such as Colt, which owns the rights to the M4 carbine, do not allow airsoft companies to use their name or markings. Airsoft guns can be divided into three distinct groups through the means of how they are powered.

Spring models are airsoft guns that require you to pump or cock the weapon every time you fire it. The spring version is usually made of plastic and can fire from 150 to 350 fps depending on the spring design and the BB weight.

Gas airsoft guns are often used only once a round and are usually saved as a side arm or secondary weapon. The gas or C02 usually only lasts through the duration of the clip and a lot of the time your shots will not be consistent.

Electric airsoft guns are more powerful and usually the most accurate. Many electric guns come with a hop up system that allows you to lay down a consistent accurate line of fire until your clip runs out. These high-grade AEG's are usually made of metal, can fire upward of 450 FPS and are designed to perform under harsh conditions.

US Special Forces groups and the US Army Ranger Regiment use a carbine version of the M16A2 known as the M4 Carbine. The M4 has a shorter barrel and a collapsible stock for a noticeably more compact profile.

The M4A1 is a compact lightweight version of the M4 Carbine that features a detachable carry handle and flat top rail system for mounting accessories. The M4A1 Carbine is capable of full-auto fire.

The M4A2 is similar to the M4A1 but has a fixed carrying handle and is capable of safe/semi-auto/3-round-burst firing modes.

M4 MWS (Modular Weapon System). Colt Model 925 carbines were tested fitted with the Knight's Armament Corporation (KAC) M4 RAS under the designation M4E2, but this designation appears to have been scrapped in favour of mounting this system to existing carbines without changing the designation.

The M4A4 is virtually identical to the M4A1 except it utilizes a safe/semi-auto/3-round-burst firing mode instead of the A1's safe/semi-auto/full-auto.

The RIS in the M4RIS stands for Rail Interface System and is used to accommodate the SOPMOD Kit (Special Operations Peculiar Modification). The SOPMOD kit consists of a 4 X Day Scope, a Reflex Sight, a Visible Laser, an Infrared Pointer / Illuminator, a Visible Light, Backup Iron Sights, and a Forward Hand Grip. - 19955

How to Have a Beautiful Bottle Garden

The reason for the division between moist and dry composts becomes apparent when planting, the next step, for it will be found that by making a planting hole one naturally goes down into the moist layer and the roots are held here, while the dry layer on the top serves to anchor the plants. So far we have managed without any tools or implements except the funnel, but now we need some help.

As it is impossible to get our fingers down through the narrow neck of the bottle our implements must be long and slim. Perhaps the best and most useful tool is an ordinary tablespoon lashed securely to a long cane. This can be used as a spade or trowel.

When the bottle is clean and shining the drainage layer can be inserted. Pea gravel is excellent for this purpose, but if poured in too casually there is a possibility that the glass could be cracked or broken, so first put in just a quarter inch or so of soft peat. It will be found easiest to make a funnel of newspaper or card to aid the insertion of this gravel and the subsequent composts, for to spoon them in takes a long and weary time. So on top of the handful of peat pour your pea gravel or similar drainage material, preferably with a few nuggets of charcoal added to absorb any unpleasant odors that may appear after the bottle garden has been growing for some months. The drainage layer should be between one and two inches in depth and is vital to the whole exercise.

Before actually beginning your planting just group your plants together still in their pots and make sure exactly where they are to go, which plant will be next to which.

Bear in mind the fact that they will grow a little, so do not plant in such a manner that one plant will hide another when this happens.

When all the moist compost has been poured in, add the dry compost evenly on top. - 19955

A Homely Atmosphere is Not Enough for Your Indoor Plants

Most plants, even the sensitive saint paulias or African violets, will grow well even in the direct sun of a south window, but a careful eye must be kept on some to determine their day to day, or even hour to hour condition and this position is not generally recommended except for cacti and succulents and other real sun lovers.

But depending on the shape and size of windows and the presence or absence of trees, walls or buildings outside, there can be a surprising difference in the quality and intensity of light in different positions in the same window.

Less than a hundred years ago only the most stately homes were able to mount displays of plants comparable to those seen today, and these succeeded only because the plants could be brought indoors for special occasions and then removed again by one of the garden staff to the conservatories, greenhouses and stove houses.

These may be minor differences but they are significant and it is well worth while observing closely the differences in the quantity and quality of light admitted by your own windows, for few face directly on to the points of the compass.

The point was made just now that if a plant appears not to be getting sufficient light it should be moved gradually to a brighter situation rather than subjected immediately to the considerable shock of a complete change of circumstance. In fact all changes of living conditions for plants should be gradual rather than immediate.

Signs of a lack of light are drawn plants, weak and spindly, with pale color and a lack of vigor. Transfer these suffering plants to a lighter place, but do this gradually to avoid too great a shock to the plants' system. Move them a foot or two each day nearer to a good light source until you see a greater depth of color in the foliage. - 19955

Watering Tips for Indoor Container Gardening

Bear in mind, however, that in winter as well as in summer leaf surfaces are apt to become dusty in the home. However clean the home and the air, all leaves must collect some dust on their surfaces and for plants with large leaves this can be a serious matter, for the leaf pores or stomata will then find it difficult to breathe.

Plants growing together in a bowl or plant community usually require less water individually than if they were growing alone, which means that the entire bowl will require less in quantity than the sum all the plants require.

I do suggest, however, that the comparatively large leaves of a Ficus elastica or Monstera deliciosa should be cleaned carefully at least two or three times a year. Do this with a soft sponge or tissue well wetted with clean, tepid water. Do not use milk or oil, however glossy these may make the leaves, for they leave a film on the surface that will inhibit transpiration.

If by some accident a plant has been given too much water, drain off any excess that may be lying free. The roots may still be waterlogged, so nothing can be done about this except to allow the plant to become almost bone dry before the next watering.

Better still where the size of the plant will allow, remove the entire plant to a sheltered spot in the garden or courtyard during a fine summer shower or drizzle. Both the falling rain and the high relative humidity will be a great tonic to almost all plants. But throughput all this talk about watering we have been assuming that all plants are in pots with a drainage hole in the base to permit the leaching away of any excess water.

For those plants which are growing in decorative pots or bowls without drainage holes, how do we ensure that the roots are not waterlogged and how often should we water? An open window only gives a drought when the wind outside is strong, for the aperture is large enough to permit the gentle entrance of fresh air. At some times, particularly in winter and more particularly still at special festive seasons such as Christmas, we are apt to congregate in larger than normal numbers in one or two particular rooms. The temperature rises, the atmosphere becomes thick and stagnant and possibly heavy with tobacco smoke.

An atmosphere of this kind is deadly to all but the least sensitive of indoor plants and if a festive gathering is planned or expected it is wise to remove from the room to a cooler spot all plants such as African violets, poinsettias and others that would certainly suffer. They can be replaced in the morning.

Only some of the really tough plants can withstand droughts, whether the air be cold or hot, so windows should be checked carefully for this and situations in the home that are subject to droughts should either not be used for plants or should be doctored to prevent these droughts. For example, in summer time plants are frequently stood in the otherwise empty and unused fireplace.

Yet unless the chimney is blocked there is a constant stream of warm air traveling along the floor and up this chimney and plants there can be seriously affected. Again, many of us like to have plants in a hallway or near the front door, for this is a means of providing a welcome to our guests. But if this doorway admits a blast of cold winter air when it is opened the plants should receive some sort of protection to avoid damage to them.

In general central heating is the best form of heating for house plants, with a gentle heat which is well spread over the entire atmosphere and no central or closely located heat spots exist to burn the delicate tissues of plants. Where plants are to be situated above or near to radiators, fit deflector plates to move the direct convected heat away from or around the plants.

Deflector shelves are available for fitting to the tops of radiators and these add to the efficiency of the heaters as well as protecting the plants. Otherwise place the plants in a position where they will benefit from the gentle warmth but not in the direct current of hot air which arises from them. - 19955

Do not feed after re potting for the first month, but allow the plant to become established and comfortable in its fresh soil. Water during this period, but only enough to keep the soil from drying out completely. The young tree has, in effect, suffered a considerable operation and a short period of rest and relaxation will be necessary before it regains its appetite and interest in life.

It is mainly in the summer that new growth will be seen. This must not be allowed to get out of hand. It is much easier for you and much better for the tree to trim and prune gradually and in small pieces rather than to have to amputate wholesale. In the case of evergreens, mainly conifers, when new growth is seen during the summer cut or pinch away the growing bud at the ends of stems where this is necessary to restrict growth.

The other end will be twisted along the branch which is to be bent and then snipped off just short of the end. Now you will find that you can very gently bend the copper wire and that it will stay in the required position, holding the branch quite firmly.

However much you may love your bonsai, remember that they are living, outdoor trees. Bring them indoors by all means for a special week-end when you expect guests or for some other similar occasion, but while indoors make sure that they are watered well, do not stand in droughts nor too near any source of heat. If possible spray them twice a day while indoors. Keep them most of the time out of doors in a position which is sheltered to some extent from winds and hot sun. In deepest winter give them some protection against sharp frosts, either by covering their containers with straw or similar material or by plunging or burying the pots in the garden soil.

Once the roots have begun to grow and spread again they will hold the tree firmly in position and the guys can be removed. Because the soil mixture is fresh it will not cling together and it will be unwise to water by total immersion, so instead stand the container in a bucket or other vessel of water which reaches almost but not quite to rim level. The moisture will be attracted through the drainage holes upwards through the soil and when the soil surface darkens and appears moist the container and its tree can be removed to drain.

Finally give the entire upper portion of the plant a thorough spraying with clean water and then put it away for a week or two to rest. - 19955

Slow cooking meat is another technique used in most Caribbean dishes. This helps the meat develop the full flavor of the seasonings and will give you a sumptuous gravy to which you won't have much to add.

How to Care for Houseplants

Generally speaking there is only one criterion for all house plants, permanent or temporary. The question we should ask ourselves is `Is it still decorative?' If the answer is yes, then keep the plant. If it is no, then either discard it completely or send it to garden, potting shed or greenhouse for treatment.

An over-watered plant dies from drowning. In a later chapter the vexed question of watering is examined in greater detail, but a brief description of the double function of watering might be helpful here.

Because plants are alive they must grow in size, but the rate of growth should be carefully controlled. We have all seen evidences of plants that have been grown carefully on the plant nursery and more recklessly when purchased and brought into the home. The leaves suddenly double in size, growth is lanky because feeding outbalances the amount of light available, stems that should be sturdy and strong become weak, sappy and bending.

More indoor plants die from over-watering and over-feeding than from any other cause and although it is impossible to lay down hard and fast rules about frequencies and quantities it is possible to suggest most strongly both that a starvation diet is to be preferred to enforced gluttony and that a period of starvation is far more likely to cure a sickly plant than overdoses of water or food.

Unfortunately with many plants the symptoms of over-watering are almost identical with those shown when the plant is dry, a frequent cause of fury and frustration to the newcomer to the house plant world.

Most plants should be allowed to become thirsty before they are watered. A domestic pet such as a cat or dog will refuse or ignore drink if it does not require it, but a plant has to suffer excess quantities willy-nilly and can only show its resentment by turning sickly. All plants are susceptible to pests and diseases. Good cultivation is the best way to prevent or deal with them. Insects that prey on roses differ from country to country but include aphids, thrips, and sawflies. - 19955

The soil in which the cuttings are to be struck should be free from perennial weeds. The rows should be 18 inches apart, and the cuttings should be 5 inches apart in the rows.

They should be inserted in the soil in such a way that only an inch is seen above soil level. This can either be done by getting out a trench 8 inches deep with one straight side and laying the cuttings in this upright. The soil should then be put back and be trodden firmly afterwards. The other method is to fork the soil over so as to make it puffy, i.e. light and friable, and then it should be possible to push the cuttings upright into the soil.

If canes are allowed to fruit, there is always the danger that (a) virus diseases will be perpetuated by means of the suckers, and (b) that some of the fruit will drop to the ground, with the result that useless seedlings may arise which will grow so fast that they take charge of the row. The writer has seen this happen more than once.

Leave the cuttings in position until the following autumn, and by then they should have rooted well and new branches should have been made. In fact, under ideal conditions each cutting may have produced branches 2-21 feet long. It helps to this end if sedge peat is used as a mulch, on either side of the rows, to the depth of an inch. Poor results invariably occur owing to shortage of moisture, and mulchings ensure good results. In very dry weather it may be necessary to water copiously during the summer, while in May the author has known it advisable to shade the cuttings with hessian or sacking.

Blackcurrants perhaps are easier to propagate than any other soft fruit. The cuttings should be taken immediately after leaf fall, the idea being to choose the well-ripened shoots of the current year's growth. Each cutting should be 9 or 10 inches long and should be prepared by making a cut with the sharp blade of a knife just above a bud at the top and just below a bud at the bottom.

After a year suckers will start to be produced around the original cane that has been planted and some of these may be cut off in the late autumn, together with their roots, for planting out in a new row. - 19955

Spring Flowering Bulbs

Give it only enough water to keep the soil just moist at first, but when the flower bud appears gradually increase the amounts.

By the time the flower stem is about a foot or so in height move the pot to a good south facing window to give the plant as much light as possible. Keep watering well while the magnificent flowers are showing and when they have finally died, cut the flower stems cleanly away at the base and continue the watering together with a weekly feed of balanced plant fertilizer.

After all danger of frost is past plunge the pot in the garden in good soil. This will induce root growth and the roots will, in fact, grow out of the pot both through the drainage hole at the base and over the top of the pot.

At the end of the summer, say at the beginning of September, remove the pot from the soil and place it in a warm dry spot, giving it no water and allowing it to die back. After a while a new flower spike will be seen and the bulb should then be removed, re-potted and the process started again from the beginning.

The Blood lily, hacmanthus, should be potted in the autumn or spring, depending on whether they are early flowering types or not. The bulbs should be placed so that half the bulb protrudes above the rim of the pot.

Give just a little water until it is obvious that the bulbs are shooting well and then increase the amounts. They like plenty of sun and regular feeding when they are pro-cluing their flowers, and once the flowers have finished they should be allowed to dry out almost completely. - 19955

Container Indoor Gardening Tips

If we continue to use commercial greenhouses as a guide to our own practices in growing plants in our own homes we shall find that although facilities always exist for the provision of good ventilation, the houses in which plants are grown are always suffused with a humid atmosphere, sometimes so humid as to be uncomfortable to humans.

All plants tend to turn towards the light and face out of a window, thus disconcertingly turning their backs to their hosts in the home. The way to prevent this is to turn the plants a quarter turn each clay so that the growth is even.

Alternatively, if the plants are suitable to this treatment, move them to a part of the room where they look across the room to the light and thus face the inhabitants all the time.

Where a situation such as this does not provide sufficient quantity of light for the plant, supplement daylight with the artificial illumination of an evening lamp.

The simplest, though not always the most practical, is to spray these plants daily or at longer intervals, using an atomiser or fine spray specially made for this purpose. But although this is probably the most efficient way of providing essential humidity for individual plants, it is as likely as not the least efficient or tolerable operation for the housewife, for inevitably walls or furniture catch some of the drifting residue of moisture.

Use a trigger sprayer for a minor pest problem, or a compression sprayer for a larger area, and spray the top and underside of the foliage thoroughly until liquid begins to run off the leaves. - 19955

All of those are great things for you, and they can be a lot of fun, but for me the most important thing is to exercise my creative voice. I think that the desire to create is an innate human one. Back in earlier times, everyone had to do a lot of crafting just to get by.

Over thousands and thousands of years, we evolved tool making abilities. Creative hobbies allow you to exercise some of this human ingenuity on your off hours " a vital release for most of us living in the modern urban world.

All of the creative hobbies are very different, and not every craft is for every person. The most abstract creative hobby, of course, is writing. Everyone likes telling stories, although most people don't recognize it. If you go to a movie and give someone a synopsis, you are storytelling. If you hear a juicy bit of gossip and embellish it before passing it on, you are constructing a story. Writing fiction takes this pleasurable activity to another level. Even if you don't have the skills to be a masterful author, I highly recommend giving it a try. It is one of the best creative hobbies out there.

For me, however, a creative hobby has to be a little bit more concrete to be truly rewarding. That is why I have always loved model making. I began building models when I was just a boy. I would construct scale plastic models with my dad and paint them in intricate detail. I moved on from there to other similar creative hobbies. Right now, my big passion is building and flying radio controlled airplanes.

This may be an expensive hobby, but it is a lot of fun. One plane can give you hundreds of hours of enjoyment as you experience the world of an aviator in miniature. You can do it in a variety of different ways as well. Some people go to the hobby store and pick up an almost ready to fly aircraft, while others prefer to take the time to assemble it in detail themselves. I've always been of the latter camp. Whether the plants or the container should be chosen first can be argued as long as the chicken and egg controversy, but do make sure that the container is sufficiently deep to take the selected plants.

Ideally the drainage layer should be covered with a strip of hessian or some similar material that will permit the immediate passage of water through it but will not allow soil particles to be washed through and so clog the drainage.

On the other hand, plants knocked from their pots and planted inside another container need not have their root ball maintained in the same pot shape. The roots can be spread out slightly to reduce the length from top to bottom.

Make sure that there is space to spare between soil level and the rim of the container. If you so wish you can sprinkle granite chippings, pebbles, coloured glass chiPs, tiny sea shells or granulated polystyrene on top of the soil to hide its surface and give a slightly more decorative effect.

The soil mixture you used was presumably comparatively dry, so the newly planted container should be watered well, the plants sprayed if possible, and the ensemble should be placed where it is to stand. Do not water again until the soil surface appears to be almost dust dry, but if convenient give a very light spray over the plants daily, either first thing in the morning or at night.

If you do not do this you may find that you change your mind halfway through the operation and have to lift one or two of the plants which are already in place. If you are all ready, put your layer of drainage material in place. This can be washed clinker, pebbles, pea gravel, broken crocks or anything that will leave the base of the container so that water will rush through to it. Among this material sprinkle a few pellets of charcoal. This will help to absorb any odours that may come from any excess moisture trapped at the base of the container. - 19955

Terrestrial cacti, wherever they come from, have one thing in common. Whether they come from bleak mountain or arid desert they get little rain, so their shape and succulent texture allow them to absorb and hold within themselves great quantities of moisture on the occasions when rain does fall.

We can quickly become bogged down by these if we pay too much attention to them so as succulents are actually quite an easy subject I propose to ignore the specialists and experts and I make herewith a plea that any confirmed succulent enthusiast who finds a technical error in these few pages should swallow his fury rather than write to point out my mistake. I know I shall be over-simplifying here. I am aware that I shall be making technical generalizations and that some of my nomenclature may be arguable. And I don't care !

The main oddity about cacti is that they have no leaves. They appear to consist entirely of fleshy stems of various shapes, usually covered or dotted with regular series of spikes or hairs.

So although we should water them quite freely in the summer, for the remainder of the year they should be allowed to become almost dust dry at the roots before watering again and in the winter water should be withheld to the extent that they almost begin to shrink and shrivel before being given a drink. Too much water at any time will lead to root or stem rot. Hence their soil mixture should be exceptionally sharp and well drained.

Most of the plants we know as cacti are more properly terrestrial cacti, this is, they grow on the ground, but a number are also epiphytic, growing in the accumulated rubbish of dropped leaves and other debris high up in trees.

Epiphytic cacti are not parasites, like our European mistletoe, for their roots do not grow into and absorb nourishment from the tree; instead they use the tree merely as a home, their roots taking moisture and food from the rotting vegetation. As might be expected, epiphytic cacti require different treatment from terrestrial types. - 19955

The second step will be to get organic seeds so that you can start to grow vegetable and herbs in your organic garden. Don't take any seeds, the vast majority are industrially and not organically grown.

Try purchasing your organic garden seeds online. There are plenty of retailers, you will have a bigger choice, the purchase will be delivered to your home and you will be protected by a postal return guarantee.

To begin seeding, don't start your organic garden outdoors right away! Use a glasshouse or put your seeds inside the house, where it's warm. Let them sprout on a piece of damp cotton or paper and then transfer them to small pots and let them grow a bit.

Once your little plants have grown two leaves, you should repot them into biodegradable pots and later bury these in your garden. You can of course also go for an indoor window garden for your herbs. These make additions to windowsills and beautify the house.

Next, think about your soil needs for the organic garden. You will need several bags of organic soil, depending on the size of your herb and vegetable plot. Little plastic bags are both easy and cheap to get and they can be used in many ways in indoor gardening. One can be filled with water and hung behind the stout stem of a foliage plant to hold cut flowers for their brief lives.

To use cut flowers with growing plants the stem ends of the flowers must obviously be in water if the plants are to live as long as possible and look their best. A small container can rest on the soil of the foliage plant, hidden by the leaves, and the flowers can be placed in water in this. Or a florist's green cone or a green painted tablet tube can be tied or taped to a stem of the plant while it holds flowers in water.

Little garden plants, the first snowdrops or primroses, can be dug from the garden and placed inside a plastic bag to be planted' in a little plant arrangement as a reassurance of the coming of spring. When the plants have finished the plastic bags can be removed again and the bulbs replanted in the garden ready for flowering again next year, for their brief glory indoors will have clone them no significant harm.

Bulb flowers, in fact, are excellent means of decorating the home and at the same time bringing fascination as they grow and open. Methods of cultivation are discussed in another chapter, but it might be well here to discuss means of using them in the so-called ' pot-et-flour' manner, combining flowers with foliage plants.

Remember, too, that the natural attractions of your plants can be enhanced by using containers that blend or contrast or otherwise give additional decorative value. You can grow plants from throw aways, for example, growing a miniature orange tree in the home, complete with little oranges. This plant is a special variety, and although it is perfectly possible, in fact quite easy, to grow little orange, lemon, grapefruit and many other trees from the pips in the fruits we have consumed, we cannot expect the plants to grow to produce fruits.

All tend to get a little leggy unless they get good light and although it is sometimes possible to get a good, bushy plant by pinching out the growing tip, some plants seem to resent this and show the fact by dropping leaves or even by dying.

Very many of the seeds we normally throw away can be grown on into little plants and I would frankly hesitate to set any specific limits in view of the letters I have had from many correspondents. I would have doubted, for example, whether one could grow a peanut or a date stone, but I have seen both done successfully.

The avocado makes a not unattractive plant with large leaves, slightly crinkled but otherwise similar to those of the rubber plant though not so thick or glossy. They appear off a central stem and after the plant has reached a couple of feet or so it is a good thing to pinch out the top to induce side branches to form. If this is not clone the plant, in inevitably losing its lower leaves, appears to be naked and unattractive. When side stems appear the lower portion is not so apparent. Leaves tend to dry out and turn brown at the edges unless sprayed occasionally to give them the humidity they need.

It is only fair that when trying to grow a plant from throwaway seeds you give them every possible advantage. Use a good soil compost, preferably John Innes or Levington, and see that the pot is kept in a warm position. One trouble with special warm positions is that they are sometimes out of the way and being out of sight can mean that they become out of mind and so tend to dry out.

Make sure that this does not happen. Keep the soil always moist, but not soaking, to give the seeds every chance to germinate. If the soil you use is sterilized you will be able to tell if the plant seed, and not a weed seed has germinated. Keep the young plant warm and even in a dark place for the first day or two and then bring it into the light, again keeping it warm and free from any draughts. A light spray with clean, tepid water will help provide the humidity that is so lacking from our homes and give the roots a chance to grow and mature. - 19955

For the Wardian case was first created in order to simplify and guarantee the safe transport of delicate plants over long distances When travel by ship on lengthy voyages was necessary.

Because the case was almost hermetically sealed all moisture given off by the plants in respiration was trapped inside the case and escaped only very slowly, so the plants never required watering. And because of the same reason the Victorian atmospheres, compounded of coal smoke and domestic gas fumes, could not enter. The plants lived for very long periods.

When in the full flush of growth a regular feed will be beneficial. After the leaves begin to fade gradually withhold water until the bulb is almost dry.

Only after the first few months is it really necessary to feed your plants, which proves quite conclusively that the nurseryman who propagated the plants in the first place used a good, rich soil with plenty of nourishment in it. I have known of cases where plants have been maintained even for years without feeding. It is true that these plants could have been larger but at least they were quite healthy.

So re-potting is not really a vital matter unless you are a real plant enthusiast, in which case it may be helpful to go a little more deeply into the details of soils than is normally done in a non-technical book of this nature.

When we talk about soils for pot plants we should more properly use the term composts, compositions composed of various constituents, of which soil is probably the most important. For all soil was once rock. Rain, frost, sun, subterranean disturbance, bacteria, animal products and even animals and plants themselves have over the centuries gradually broken clown the surface rock to form soil. These rock particles can vary in size from stones and pebbles to a very fine substance almost like powder which is so fine that under the influence of water it binds together like glue and forms clay.

So some plants come to us with a slightly acid or slightly alkaline soil, some with a light, sandy, open mixture and others in a heavier loam. But in every case any new plant is in good soil and will need no re-potting for up to the first year or so, after which it depends on the size of the plant, your own skill and several other factors.

Other means of keeping plants watered include standing them in a bath or sink containing an inch or two of water and perhaps leaving a tap gently dripping. A wick watering method is to group a number of plants together on the floor, preferably standing them on a polythene sheet for safety. By them stand a chair or stool on which stands a bucket of water. From the water bucket lead to each plant a fabric or fibreglass wick (a school-boy's football bootlace does excellently!) and anchor this in position. The water from the bucket will gradually drip down the wick and into the soil of each plant. - 19955

In this article I will help you figure out if purchasing an all in one keyboard workstation or just a simple midi controller with a module or software is a better choice for your budget and needs.

Of all of the musical instruments to choose from, none have had the ability to be used in a digital format for longer than the keyboard. Since the 60s many major achievements have been made toward the advancement of synthesizers, none bigger than the Moog which used analog circuitry and set the standard for synths to come. Over the next two decades digital technology would eventually prevail over the much larger analog snyths becoming what is now the industry standard. Today the choice between digital versus analog is more of a preference than anything else. The purist will say a digital version of the analog sound is far superior and while its always better to have the exact source, with todays digital sound banks it is doubtful they could pick out which one is which on an actual recording.

So when you when you decide to make your purchase you have two main options to select from. Do you go the software route or stay with the more conventional all in one keyboard workstation. It is my hope that I will be able to guide you on your journey, helping you make the choice which is best for you. First, lets see what each setup is made of. The digital workstation is pretty much what you see is what you get. It's all built into the unit and unless you want to add some accessories then you need nothing else. Now the first drawback to some wanting to use software is that this is a bit more of a setup. The heart and soul is your computer and if you want to use this for gigging then you have to have a laptop.

After the computer, a sound card will be needed in order process the digital signal. You can try using what is already built in to your computer but the latency will probably to much to overcome. There are many way to go when purchasing a sound card but buying an external card will save in setup costs unless you are comfortable with installing it yourself. We will also need a midi keyboard controller and the software package that you prefer. Once you have that then you have a solid software setup ready for use.

Wow, it can be a bit overwhelming when considering a software setup. So why would anyone choose this route then? As far as Im concerned the sounds are far superior to anything you will find built into a workstation and the ability to expand your setup and add-on is limitless. Not only that, but you now have the capability to record your ideas or songs using a piece of recording software like (Pro-Tools, Nuendo, etc). As a matter of fact you kill two birds with one stone buy purchasing an M-box by Pro-Tools. Not only would that allow you to record onto your computer and come with the software to do that, you could use it for live performances as well.

When decision time comes, does setup time and portability weigh heavier than the quality of sounds and limitless extensibility? You also have to consider that the software solution adds a home studio into the equation for no extra cost. To be fair, workstations do have the capability to do some simple recordings but it is not something you could really take advantage of in a band situation. I don't know about you but I like the idea of doing some full demos as well.

When looking for the right software I would look at Native Instruments as a great starting place. A personal favorite of mine is also the libraries created by East West. They use professional musicians to record each sound and create a sound bank of wav files of organic instruments. With a keyboard controller you can build an entire score that will sound just as real as an actual symphony.

Finally what are the cost benefits of going one way or another? Well if you need portability do you have a laptop? If not then its easy to say that the software route will cost more due to the fact that a laptop will need to be included in the overall price. Workstations will range from 1 to 4 grand and will probably have better playability than most midi keyboard controllers.

If you add up software, controller and sound-card, it could be under a grand depending on how much software you buy but keep in mind that some of the really good software from East West and others can add up quick, although they have dropped their prices tremendously over the last few years. The trees look most attractive when they are blossoming, and equally beautiful when they are covered with fruit, especially if you grow crimson dessert varieties.

Inflorescence racemose; sepals 4, in 2 whorls; petals 4, with long claws, usually yellow; stamens 6; stigma usually capitate.

Fruit a siliqua with convex valves, tipped by a usually seedless beak. Seeds in a single row in each loculus, spherical.

Synonyms are B. napus L. var. chinensis O.K. Schult, B. pekinensis (Lour.) Rupr., B. petsai Bailey, B. campestris L. Some authorities now consider that Brassica campestris L. is a more valid name and that this species should be divided into two varieties: var. chinensis (Paak-ts'oi) and var. pekinensis (Pe-tsai).

The most commonly grown Brassicas in tropical areas are: Brassica chinensis L. - Chinese Cabbage, White Cabbage; Brassica juncea (L) Czern & Coss - Indian Mustard, Leaf Mustard; Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala D.C. - Kale, Collard; var. botrytis L. - Cauliflower, Broccoli; var. capitata L. - Cabbage; var. gongylodes L. - Kohlrabi; var. italica Plenck - Sprouting Broccoli; var. rapa L. - Turnip.

These basic rules should keep all pests and diseases away, but the occasional appearance of aphids may sometimes be expected in the summer if, for example, the roses have not been sprayed recently. However deeply the normal gardener cultivates, he cannot possibly get down to a 10-foot depth, where the roots will undoubtedly be, and therefore he must rely on the soil fungi and bacteria, plus the worms, to carry out the improvement of his soil where it is most needed. Worms will carry plant foods, applied as a surface dressing, deep down into the soil, and it is there that it will become available to the roots when droughty weather may make the top few inches too dry for fibrous roots to feed in.

The reason therefore top dressings of well-rotted compost, sedge peat or old farmyard manure, is that the worms play their part in breaking down organic matter, and if you are looking for a large and active population of worms, as you should be, then the top dressings which have been advised-and will be advised again and again-should be given year after year.

The maintenance of organic matter is the only practicable method of ensuring these soil conditions necessary for healthy plant growth, and as such is of paramount importance.'

Although the epiphyllums are cacti they are different in appearance, having long, narrow stems almost with the appearance of leaves, (in fact these are sometimes called ' leaf-flowering ') and their method of treatment is entirely different, for as we have seen earlier they grow on trees in a decomposed leaf mold compost and they consequently require more water and less intense light than their terrestrial cousins. On the other hand their stems are fleshy and capable of absorbing and holding considerable quantities of moisture, so they can live for long periods without watering and although they prefer some shade they will not suffer unduly if subjected to intense sunlight.

At home in the wild, growing in little pockets of decomposed vegetation in the crannies of trees, the roots are comparatively confined in space and although the `soil' mixture is rich and generally moist it is really wet only for brief periods.

Bud development is largely influenced by photosynthetic processes and is therefore dependent on the length of daylight. Plants are divided according to their response to long or short days. Some can adjust themselves to artificial ' day' length, but others cannot, The Christmas cactus needs a short day to flower well and artificial light in living-rooms can inhibit flower development and opening.

As each bud grows and develops it receives minutely different amounts of light, dependent upon its position on the stem and distance from the light source. It is helpful (though not always vital) to maintain this pattern, and for this reason once bud initiation has begun and the plant is brought indoors it should not be moved from its position until flowering of the entire plant has been completed, a matter which can sometimes take several weeks.

If the plant must be removed to water it, make sure that it is replaced in exactly the same position and the only way to do this is to mark both the pot and the shelf, window sill or other location.

Propagation of nearly all cacti, whether terrestrial or epiphytic, is usually a comparatively simple matter from cuttings. Seeds of terrestrial cacti are simple to germinate and can sometimes produce interesting plants. - 19955

The first thing that you need to consider is what kind of bird you wish to attract to your birdhouse. It's a good idea to dig up some information on that species of bird in order to research their nesting habits. It might play an important role in the proper construction to know certain points regarding different types of birds. Things like nesting and whether or not they are seasonal are good things to look at.

Knowing what kind of bird you want to design your house for makes it easier to know which measurements you need. Having a door that is too small will pose a problem. A door that is much too big can also be a problem because it allows other birds to fit inside. Some birds are very territorial and do not want to share their dwellings with others. Determine this type of thing before you go ahead with your building.

It's extremely crucial that you do not hang your finished birdhouse anywhere that a predator may reach it. Cats are very adept at climbing so the birdhouse should securely hang from a branch or post not easily accessible to that type of predator. People can be predators too. Take care not to post your birdhouse somewhere that it may come into contact with pesticide sprays or children that can access and disturb it.

Using the most durable wood possible is a must. Weak wood is prone to breaking down faster or becoming rotten due to rain. Select a tough wood and treat the outside of the house with a varnish to give it additional resistance to rain and weather damage. The last thing you want is for your birdhouse to develop mould on the interior. There is a chance baby birds may be hatched inside. All necessary precautions should be taken.

Always measure the wood out to the exact measurements. It's simply not enough to estimate distances like that. If a measurement falls short it could result in gaps where wind and water can leak in. Drainage holes should always be drilled into the bottom to prevent the birdhouse from flooding. That would be an unfortunate mishap which could result in baby birds drowning. Do not let this be a possibility.

With a really young tree it is unnecessary, indeed unwise, to grow it from the beginning in a precious, decorative, tray-like container. Grow it instead in an ordinary but small flower pot until it is large enough to begin the training process.

If it is out of doors in a porch or on the terrace, make sure that the sun will not strike too strongly on it for long periods and that it is protected from any particularly strong winds such as sometimes whistle around corners or through gaps in the building or vegetation.

If you intend to collect your own tree from woods or hillside, look if possible for a tiny specimen that is already semi-dwarfed and misshapen because its roots are growing in a rock crack or bent by another tree.

Note carefully the type of soil in which it is growing: leafmould, peat, calcareous rock particles, and scoop up a little of the same soil to use in your potting compost. Dig up the plant very carefully, preferably with a good root ball and certainly with no essential damage to the roots. You may find that even a tiny tree has at its base a strong and deep growing tap root.

Be quite clear in your own mind of the final shape in which you want the bonsai to grow, whether this be bushy, spreading, drooping or upright.

Cut away cleanly, with a very sharp knife, a razor blade or sharp scissors or pruners, any branch that spoils the shape. Cut this flush with the main trunk and trim the cut delicately so that no snags or ragged edges are left. - 19955

The original Ficus elastica, the rubber plant, is seldom seen today. Although the plants we buy under this name are related to the wild original, they have been bred, crossed, cultivated and so changed by the hybridists and plant breeders that they now demand on the whole greater light than their parents. There are, in fact, variegated forms with paler green and sometimes even golden streaks and blotches that to some give them greater attraction.

So whereas a monstera will grow and flourish in normal home conditions, if it is removed to a greenhouse or conservatory with the same temperature but better light it will almost certainly burst into flower and then fruit.

Unfortunately this presents us with a decorative problem. If a dark leaved plant is to be placed in a dark corner of our rooms, who will see it? The only answer I have been able to discover so far to this conundrum is the Spathiphyllum wallisii, a dark leaved plant, again an arum, which bears attractive white flowers. Yet to get the white flowers in the first place it is necessary for the plants to be in comparatively good light, which brings us back to where we were in the beginning.

Most of the ivies we grow in our homes will adapt themselves to outdoor living after a brief period and the effect of the better light is astonishing. They grow lusher, more exuberantly and they produce flowers and fruit prodigiously because they have better light.

Only a photo-electric cell or light meter will normally reveal for us the surprising difference between interior and exterior light and it is a real education and an assistance in understanding the problems of house plants to take certain readings on occasion.

Even on the darkest and gloomiest winter day out of doors we shall always find a significant reading in the daylight, yet we shall find it difficult sometimes to get the same reading indoors even on the brightest and sunniest of summer clays! - 19955

We have seen that in general, light is more important for house plants than warmth, feeding or even water, although it must be obvious that some of all of these are necessary for the long life and healthy growth of all plants. But it is difficult to realize that as humans we are tremendously adaptable, much more so than less sophisticated plants.

We can not only live in extremes of light and shade, warmth and coolness, that would kill most house plants, but most of us would find it difficult if not impossible even to notice degrees of light and shade that can mean life and death to some plants. So how are we to determine the necessary demands of these plants?

First, we should look for color. The greatest degree of color, certainly the most obvious color, in a plant is in its flower. So if a plant is grown for its flowers rather than its foliage we know immediately that it must have good light.

Even simpler than this is to stand the plant pot again in a larger container, but instead of packing the space between the two with peat or other absorbent material, stand the plant pot on an upturned saucer, on gravel or pebbles, on a block of wood or on anything else that will serve to collect excess moisture and release it gently to the atmosphere without at the same time allowing the base of the plant pot to paddle permanently in water.

Still another advantage in the two methods outlined above is that one can select cover pots to flatter the room decor or to blend harmoniously with the foliage or flowers of the plant it so comfortably harbors.

Where several plants stand together in a community it can be helpful to use a tray to hold them. If the floor of this tray is covered with sand, peat or gravel, it will collect excess moisture safely and provide extra humidity to the plants. - 19955

Ghost towns are pretty much plenty in the state of Illinois. But what are ghost towns? Are they old, creepy towns inhabited by spiritual entities that refuse to leave the physical plane and choose to haunt the people in it instead?

No, much as it sounds like it is. Ghost towns are essentially, yes, they are old towns that have been abandoned by their residents for probably different reasons. Natural disasters, economic reasons, sociological, government or war. What stands are probably a few houses and community structures, some landmarks and derelict roads. Ghost towns are more numerous in the state of Illinois. Towns are declared ghost towns if the number of residents exceed the supposed population density of the area.

Most of the ghost towns have been abandoned for human safety, usually by disasters and situations caused by people themselves. Some of which, have been found out for potential health concerns in the area, others for testing and for progress. Usually, when these happens, the town starts to lose their value little by little The buildings lose their luster when no one uses them and cares for them anymore. The roads start to be overgrown by flora, and the roads around the area become incomprehensible. Vines and plants also invade the buildings, and electricity is cut off, leaving the town dark at night. Animals start moving in and the whole town either gets preserved or falls down.

There are some ghost towns available for tourism, those that are deemed safe for travel. Others are not accessible to the public, due to private owning or because of apparent danger in the area.

Illinois has at least has forty two ghost towns in the area, some of which can be visited like Benjaminville and Kaskaskia. The tour would offer great studying, and research for some of the visitors. Some of the towns have pre-packaged tours for the ghost towns, most are the nearby towns who benefit from the tourism. - 19955

The tools used are sharp chisels and carving blades which is downright dangerous in the hands of a child. But, don't let this discourage your child; let him or her try it out, but with you nearby and alert to their every movement. Guide the child as he or she goes about it and carefully keep watch. Also, don't be afraid to research safety tips or enlist the help of a seasoned woodcarver.

A child will quickly get the hang of a new-found talent, and once your child becomes sufficiently good at doing his or her craft, you may want to encourage him to attend craft shows. What is good about playing a warrior in world of warcraft? There are a fair few world of warcraft guides around, but all of them seem to be focuses on PvP and the info there seems to be a bit too terse and technical. Instead what we shall concentrate on is what it is to be playing a warrior either in a group or alone, without all that jargon.

You will always be warned against playing a warrior in WoW because are so gear dependent. This is actually great news because the warrior's range of gear is far superior to any other class. The only weapons they can't use are wands and relics, and they are the only class, apart from Paladins, that can plate up once hitting level 45 . Wearing plate not only makes your character look fantastic but it adds to their awesome armor and power.

The power they possess for taking and giving damage is such that warriors are also known as tanks when playing in groups. This is also a term spawned by the fact that while in group combat the warrior is the chief taker and giver of major damage and as such probably the most essential member to have on board to ensure success. Very rarely, if at all, there will be any instance run or raid where there in no tank and the warrior is the best tank in the business. One or two other classes can assume this role but they are not, shall we say, born to do it as well.

A warrior as in all classes in WoW has three main trees from which they can later on specialize as follows:

Arms Warrior specialization is one that allows a warrior to have many faceted talents mainly focused on offensive and utility purposes. As weapons they will use two handed axes, maces or swords to inflict the heaviest damage. Abilities like Mortal Strike further impact on their destructive ability in combat. Overall a great specialization if you like access to a large range of weapons and shields.

Fury Warriors: also known as the Rogues with plate as they share similar stats and weapon damage. They too fight with two handed weapons and use talents where one blow can literally turn and win them the fight. For fast warrior power levelling in WoW, this is the tree specialization you need to be on.

Protection Warriors: for tank spec this is the class to be. More defensively minded, using shields and sword mastery to fend off off enemies and absorb and deflect damage. This makes them last longer in combat than the other two tree specializations and required if want to play your warrior as a tank.

It should also be mentioned that whatever type of tree you build up, talents and abilities are limited in access by the stance a warrior assumes. These are: Battle Stance (Normal), Defensive Stance (Protection), and Berserker Stance (Fury). Obviously each stance will be more leaned to what kind of warrior you specialized into ie Beserker Stance for Fury Warriors and Defensive Stance for Protection Warrior (tanks). - 19955

The Importance Of Fertilizer To Your Lawn

The single most important tool a gardener works with is the soil on his property. The quality of soil will of course vary greatly from one area to another, and all information outlined in this particular chapter is applicable to local conditions. As a general, soil can be divided into three groups; clay, sand or silt. The ideal combination of soil contains all three ingredients and is classified as garden loam. Clay soils have the best water holding retention capacity, and of course a sandy soil has the least.

Binding material of all good soil is an organic called humus, that increases the water holding capacity and easily absorbs the sun rays. Humus also liberates the compounds for plants from the soil and provides fertilization and improves soil texture quality.

Humus is added to the soil by using an organic fertilizer such as manure or the contents of a compost pile. Humus can also be bought directly, however the expense is prohibitive if going to be used in a large area and needs treatment.

Soil is actually a living thing. Even in the smallest area there are several million animal and plant organisms going about their specific tasks. The more bacterial activity that goes on translates to mean a more fertile soil. Fertility needs four elements; bacteria, sunshine, water and a food source. Given the sunlight, all of the other elements can be added to the soil during proper maintenance. Organic fertilizers give the soil all three of these elements. There is a number of ways that these materials can be added to the soil and a most of them are common and easy to do.

A compost heap is a combination of soil mixed with organic materials such as; manure, garbage, and plant cuttings. The heap is prepared by first placing a layer of inactive material and placing a layer of soil, alternate the layers of organic material and soil mixture to a height of around four feet. The width of the heap should be from four to six feet tall and the pile needs to be kept wetted down during the first few weeks and should be turned at regular intervals as well. When the pile begins to decompose, proceed to a sufficient point, the compost can be added into the soil.

Using Mineral and Nonorganic Fertilizers

Organic fertilizers, for example, those found in a compost heap or animal manure, can be added into organic fertilizer to make the best soil food. Organic fertilizers can be classified by their content of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash. You may find a fertilizer designated with a ratio of 2/6/2, this means it has two parts nitrogen, 6 parts phosphorus and two parts potash. The numbers of inorganic fertilizer always shows the proportions in the form noted above.

What are Cover Crops?

Certain crops will add the inorganic elements back into the soil as they grow and will also provide a valuable organic type manure. Cover crops are the best way to fertilize land and though they take time, usually a growing season, to produce their best effort. Cover crops like alfalfa and soybeans add nitrogen back into the soil when planted and when plowed under, provide more. A good cover crop of say legumes, can add over 100 pounds of nitrogen into the soil on a per acre basis or the equivalent would be around 10-15 lbs. of animal manure. Nitrogen and mineral content in the cover crope are highest before maturity and should be then plowed under. Hairy vetch is another good example of a cover crop that is a good soil builder, it may be sown in September and plowed under in May.

Keeping the Soil in the best condition

Keeping soil healthy and fertile does require an effort. Fertilizing during the growing season and during prep are very important. The best and easy way to add fertilizer is to add either organic fertilizer or inorganic one to the water supply and then use it to water soil. This ensures an even distribution and a quick absorption time to avoid lawn burn. You can spread it either by via a spread or by hand, such as on the lawn, but then you need to wash down with the hose.

If you are working on soil foundation issues, apply the fertilizer prior to working with a spade or tiller, then try to work it in evenly.

You can user lime, especially if you live in the Atlantic Coastal region where there is less calcium in the soil and the soil is more acidic. If you use ground limestone, with a bunch of organic matter, you are not apt to use more than you need. - 19955

Bird house making is really easy as long as you love what you are doing. It is also an effective way to make your house - as well as you - feel chirpy and bright in the morning. Believe it or not, nothing beats having birds outside your homes. The following are tips and advice to make the dream bird house that you always imagined you would have. Also included are the ways and methods of appropriately setting up the bird houses.

First things first, the point of bird houses is to bring in birds. Attracting them however is just half of the story, it is making them return as much as they possibly could, that is the challenge. Hopefully, the following guidelines will work.

Have a roof that is hinged

Providing a roof that is hinged on the sides is an effective way for you to make house cleaning a lot easier especially during the spring. Spring cleaning during the early weeks of March is a good idea. As much as possible, use hinges that are rust proof. Remember that animals such as raccoons are able to open an eye and a hook.

Place appropriate ventilation

Drill four drain holes that measure about one fourth inch in every bird house's bottom. Also, add two five eighth hole ventilations on the top of each house's side.

Place a roof

Provide a bird house roof that has at least an overhang of two inches in the bird house's front in order to protect the hole's entrance from rain that is driven by wind as well as to prevent animals like cats from reaching inside. Also, the sides of the bird house should be enclosed towards the floor in order to keep the rain from having to seep inside the bird house nest.

Try to recess the bird house floor about one fourth of an inch from the bird house's bottom in order to prevent it from rotting as caused by the moisture.

Bird house perches

Believe it or not, putting perches on the bird house is a no-no. The birds that do appreciate and do perch are the starlings and the sparrows. For bird houses of song birds, keep the holes of the entrance about an inch and three eights inch small in order to keep the house sparrows and starlings out. Of course, the exception are the purple martins.

How should the bird houses be spaced?

If there are other bird houses or boxes near, they should therefore be spaced appropriately about twenty five feet far from each other. Houses for bluebirds meanwhile require about three hundred feet. The space is important in order to reduce any conflicts. Another reason for this is because a lot of birds are actually territorial and so protecting the area around the bird's nest is important. The exception to this are mergansers, wood ducks and goldeneye. Putting their bird houses close to each other is okay.

Purple martins meanwhile prefer to live in bird colonies and so apartment bird houses is their specific preference and not single family bird houses.

What kind of material is best for bird houses?

The best to use is wood. As much as possible, avoid lumber that is treated with pressure because once wet, it excretes vapors that poisons birds. Using preservatives like stain or paint could be used on the box's outside, especially the back. Using the chemical preservative creosote should also be avoided.

Sandpaper is quite a favourite amongst artists today. Watercolour paper too, is quite good, which can be tinted with any water based paint. I find that the texture of this paper to work on is good, but I would say, it is often better to cover with a good gesso or even acrylic paint.

If you pay your local art shop a visit, you will find that there are plenty of basic papers you can use, suitable for this type of work, which also come in many colours. Sandpapers too, are always interesting and these not only come in different colours but also other textures.

As for the types of papers to use, one ideal paper would be oil sketching paper. Good for oil pastels, as it is similar to a canvas type of surface. Failing that, you could use Mineral spirits can be used to correct any errors you might make. It acts like an eraser.

You can use both sides of the paper of Mi-Tientes for oil pastels but it is thicker than Ingres paper. Ingres paper is quite strong and adaptable. It works very well with your paint and mineral spirit.

Mi-Tientes is very good for oil pastels as you can use either side of the paper. The wrong side being smooth and the right side fairly textured. So this is good, with the mineral spirits spreading the oil pastels flexibility without spoiling your paper. I would not recommend using turpentine though, because it might disintegrate your paper eventually, as it is a bit oily.

A good cloth to ask for is soft pastels paper. Paper cloth with a strong back, but is a synthetic mixed cloth so you can underpaint it, but it stays firm when wet.

You could also try using Flour Paper which is good for doing pastels on, but usually is in small sheets only.

Let's go to Sandpapers now: Wet or dry? You have the two choices of Sandpapers. This paper is Black and you can put a wash on it and as it only comes in small sizes I would choose the finest, type 400. If you would like to use large sheets in a natural colour you can purchase Artists' Quality Sandpaper.

Velour paper has a coating to it which looks powdery. This is ideal if you have a painting with a lot of work on it, as it retains the colour pigments.

"Not" is a water colour paper, is very popular. Unfortunately only available in white. This is good as you can use with a dry wash of pastel, by tinting with acrylics, watercolours.

Generally it is better to use acid free papers, as otherwise the colours may fade in time. I think that recycled paper often works well, if all else fails. It is trial and error experimenting with the different surfaces available. If you want to do heavy work, you can buy pastel papers which are affixed to mat boards. This is a nice strong base on which to work. Although it is not acid free, I think good results can be achieved on ordinary brown wrapping paper. - 19955

The extraction of quicklime and slaked lime, extra calcium content in food, cement and mortar feed, toothpaste, soil acid neutralizer, white pigment, aggregate, glass making, base floor for petroleum reservoirs in underground caves, desulfurization and others. Limestone is probably the most used rock in all fields and industry.

Indiana boasts a good deposit of limestones in its mines, specifically in the hilly regions down South. The mines renowned for their limestone are found near Lawrence County. A lot of the important buildings around the area and in the country have had their facing done with limestone from the Indiana state, like the facing of the Pentagon.

The potential risks of fire that fluorescents pose make LEDs a more safer option. HPS lights require heavy ballasts and can be difficult to mount, and electrical installation may require professional help. LED lights are installed simply, as easy as hanging the light and plugging it in.

Whether or not an investment in LED is worth the initial costs depends on how committed to indoor gardening you are. If your ambitions are simple and you only need to grow a few starters, traditional HPS lights may be better. In the Heart of the New York Catskill Mountains, there is a place called Nicks Waterfall House. I have been there many times and it has become one of my favorite places of all time to ride to.

There are times when the stress of our lives and jobs can get even the best of us a little down. If you are a straight lace citizen you go to a Doctor and get some pills or maybe see a shrink. If you are a Biker you hop on your Motorcycle get the motor running and you head out to a place like Nicks Waterfall House.

It does not matter where you are or what direction you come from. The ride threw the NY Catskill Mountains is going to relax the stress away from the depths of your very soul. As you ride to Nick's threw long winding roads up over and into the heart of some of the worlds most majestic Mountains, with the Sun shining down on you and the fresh Mountain air filling your lungs you will start to get a feeling of what one can only describe as pure joy.

As you get near Nicks Waterfall House located on Route 990v, Gilboa New York 12076, either alone or with a group of friends. You will feel as if time and space are no longer a factor in the Universe, and it only gets better from there! As you ride in the first thing many think is they have reached some old time lost resort, but have no fear Nicks is a Biker bar.

When you walk threw the front door you will no longer have any doubts you have arrived at the right place. If Nick is not there to great you himself, there is a good chance he is in his large kitchen cooking up some classic Biker grub. I recommend the first thing you do is order an Ice Cold Beer and go sit by the large windows over looking a Waterfall that looks as if it was stolen from the year 1492. If there is any stress or negative emotions left in your body after the ride to the Waterfall House after only a few minutes watching the water fall down and roll over the rocks it will soon have all washed down stream.

Then it is time to meet the locals, grab another Beer and maybe some of that great food (My favorite is the Waterfall House Cheeseburgers) or maybe shoot a game of pool. The crowd at Nicks is a mix of friendly Bikers, locals and good ole boys. This is a place to exchange stories and Adventures from the road. Often the sharing of stories can go on for hours.

It is easy to have what some may call too much fun at Nicks Waterfall House but with rooms up stairs starting at only $25 a night, there is no reason to worry! Now I want to make sure that you know when I tell you there are rooms at Nicks you understand these rooms where created for road weary bikers. If you bring your old lady with you make sure she is a real biker Chick because Nicks is no Yuppie bed and breakfast! It is a real bikers, biker bar and what you get when you rent a room from Nicks is a communal living room a bed to sleep in and a shower to wash off the road dust! One other thing you get from a night at Nicks is a renewed Spirit of Adventure and a willingness to face what ever maybe up around the next bend in your life!

I have many local Bars that I think of as home and I love to go to and cut loose, but when I hear that call of the road it is often telling me it is time to go to Nick's Waterfall House!!!

You can place them on the corner of you house for a shady but not too large anchor tree, or plant them in the side yard for a classy look. In addition, birch trees make great plantings for areas of your landscape that don't drain well. They drink up a lot of water!

They are susceptible to leaf beetle damage during the summer and iron chlorosis can also cause them issues, but other than that, they are really hardy and healthy growers that can live more than 30 years.

Crab Apple Trees

Old timers and young folks alike love the standby spring flowering crab apple tree. With its bright pink or stunning white flowers that bloom in the early spring, the crab is a beautiful addition to any landscape scent. They are also great within planting beds because dwarf varieties are available for any situation. They even come in weeping forms.

The only problems they have are the development of apple scab fungus, but most newer varieties are resistant. Check with your local nursery before purchasing.

Rose Of Sharon

Primarily known as a summer flowering shrub, the rose of Sharon is related to the tropical hibiscus plant. The Sharon can also be grown in an upright topiary form which makes it appear like a nicely shaped tree. Plant them in anchor positions around the landscape for later summer flower pop.

How to Grow Houseplants for Your Larder

Whether you grow the one or both, use a seed box containing up to two inches of finely sifted soil, light and well drained. Sow the seed thickly on the surface and do not cover this but press it down firmly into the surface. Water well, place inside a transparent plastic bag and put away in an airing cupboard or some similar place where the temperature will be fairly steady at between 5o and 60F.

I have yet to meet a woman gardener who is not more thrilled and satisfied by her radish and lettuce than by her chrysanthemums, who does not tend her herbs with greater care than her alpines. Once these women learn that they can grown fresh chives on their kitchen window sills, few dishes seem to appear without this garnish and once the breakthrough occurs there is no holding them.

Miniature bay trees, no more than two feet tall, are on sale in many garden centers and have met with a ready response. They have been grown especially for indoor cultivation and are quite attractive in appearance with their regular, triangular shape and their thick, dark green leaves. Bay leaves are not so frequently used as some herbs, and the odd leaf or two plucked for soups and stews will not be missed from the thick-growing foliage. When the bay is clipped into shape the shoots may be dried.

A means of growing herbs in the house in a more decorative manner is to make use of a terracotta strawberry pot, the kind with several lips or openings in the sides. The mere shape of the pot is pleasant and when the green growth appears out of the openings and cascades down the sides the effect can be quite charming.

By trial and error you will soon find how many seeds should be sown for a single meal or helping, for unlike mustard and cress this is seldom a crop that can be used with a large number of dishes. On the other hand, they make an excellent and welcome addition to soups, stews and salads, and once tried many uses can be found for them.

Yet the cress is almost tasteless and used mainly as a filler and a softener for the stronger tasting mustard. Try to grow mustard alone. When it is cut young and immature it is quite mild. - 19955

Botanical Gardens at Fort Worth

I really did not understand what had gotten my friend hyped up when I told her to go to Fort Worth Botanical Gardens to relax. Apparently, the effect she got was somewhat reversed for her.

The Fort Worth Botanical Gardens is a collection of different themed gardens, just west of central downtown. It's a highly relaxing sanctuary of plants, water, birds and beasts. An aria of different plants, all from different biomes around the world are collected and grown, planted and displayed for everyone to see.

The cool part? Free parking! I don't know about you, but parking had always been one of the bigger hassles when it came to trying to relax to some 'spa' or some 'nature park'. Having your parking worries quelled is one way to stifle problems when it comes to relaxing.

The gardens they boast are NUMEROUS. They have rose gardens, fuller gardens, Japanese gardens, perennial gardens, fragrance gardens, trial gardens, four seasons, the Texas Native boardwalk, the Conservatory, the Water Conservation Garden and the Water Wise Garden. Of note is the Rose garden, which was inspired by Italy's Villa Lante and has a lot of vista views. The garden is pock-marked with bushes of rosy goodness everywhere. The Japanese garden is also of note, as it is a few of the places you actually have to pay to get in. But it's worth seeing the friendly koi amble with your finger as you dip it in the pond.

The park has a slew of events like volunteer workshops, festivals, children's gardens and more. It's a community effort, one that connects people together as they hoe the fields, plant the seedlings and enjoy the time together under the shade of a tree.

Perhaps, there is more to it than just relaxing in Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. - 19955

Growing Houseplants on Your Own

And finally there is the slightly more difficult and delicate method of increasing or resuscitating your plants by means of layering. Some layering can be carried out at soil level, again as one might do in the garden, and sometimes we use a process known as air layering, where by using various aids it is possible to root a new plant high on the stem of the old.

There are several ways we can grow our own plants and each method will be discussed separately. We can grow many of our plants from seed in exactly the same way that we grow plants for the garden.

A few seeds, such as coleus, cinerarias, primulas and a few others, can be grown satisfactorily in the home without the necessity of special aids other than those which are readily available, but others demand high degrees of humidity and heat which it is not possible for us to provide unless we have the facilities of a greenhouse or a special propagating case or even both.

Let them grow for a day or two and then make sure that they get plenty of light and a little ventilation. Open the neck of the bag for a little while each day, increasing the time as the seedlings grow.

Sometimes plants can be propagated by two or more means, in which case it is best to decide on the easiest or quickest method. One of the easiest is to divide plants at their roots, this making two or more from the original one, much as you would do with perennial plants growing in the garden border. - 19955

Propagating Houseplants from Stem Cuttings

Where cuttings are particularly woody, such as may be found with a rubber plant or other members of the ficus family, some ivies and perhaps the crown of thorns, it will sometimes be helpful to enlist the aid of a garden chemical and make use of a root hormone powder.

Wet the end of the stem where you take your cutting, dip the end in the hormone powder and then firm the cutting into the soil as suggested earlier. These hormone rooting powders assist the formation of roots.

On the other hand, some plants such as ivies, some philodendrons, coleus and certain other plants will form roots quite easily in water alone. Take the cutting and merely stand the cut end in a little phial or jar of clean water, allowing it to stay there until roots are seen to have formed. It is possible then either to pot up the new plant in the normal way, or to add soil or the peat mixture gradually to the water until the correct consistency has been achieved.

Once roots have formed and the new plant is growing strongly, whichever method has been used, then it can be planted up separately, always using a pot only just large enough to hold the roots without cramping them.

As the young plant grows it will need potting on into a larger container and when it is strong enough it will be helpful to use a potting mixture with a ittle more fertilizer in it, so change the mixture then, but not before.

You should take care for your indoor houseplants with precaution so that your houseplants will thrive and stay healthy. - 19955

Treating Your Plants With Proper Care

Treatment of Plants

Bulbs In Bowls

Planting bulbs in a bowl container filled with fiber, makes it possible to have flowers all year long.

The secret of being successful is to plant the bulb as soon as they are obtained in August or September. The fiber, is sold for this purpose, must be wetted prior to being up in the bowl, in which a few chunks of charcoal have been places. After putting the bulbs into position, their tips need to be just above the surface of fiber.

To make sure your roots develop freely, the bowl the bulbs are put in must me placed in the proper position. The best place is outside, under a nine inch mound of peat moss, or even covered with bags and a piece of wood to keep the rain out.

If there are no outside places available, put the bowl in a deep box or bath, cover in the same manner above and stand them in the coolest place possible. At the end of a 4-8 week period, roots should be formed in abundance and shoots should be about 2 inches long. The covering should be taken off and the bulbs should remain until the shoots turn green. Forcing may begin by putting the bowl into a warm location, this is where the shoots can begin to bloom, of the fiber is kept moist.

To take advantage of having a long display, the variety you choose should be taken into consideration.

Hyacinths-The first one of this type of flower that will bloom is the Roman White variety. The blooms look like white bluebells; then will come the hyacinths, which have been specially prepared to make them bloom during Christmas time.

In the springtime is when the ordinary, larger flowered, untreated hyacinths bloom.

Narcissus-The white Narcissus is easily obtained while in full bloom in the month of December. The success can be maintained by other types, described in the bulb catalog.

Some types can be forced rather easy and are followed by other single tulips.

Holiday Treatment of Houseplants

What do you do with house plants during the holidays? The big question here is how to care for plants left alone while you are out for your holiday vacation. Unless you can make arrangements to have them watered while you are away, you can run into problems. When you are gone for a week or more, it is possible to prevent damage if you take the proper precautions.

The best way is to obtain a large tub and fill it with dampened moss. Then plunge the plants into the pot, with the moss covering the soil to about an inch or more in depth. If moss is not accessible, granulated peat moss or damp sacking can also be substituted. Lastly, the material for plunging needs to be covered with plastic film which will slow the evaporation of moisture. The plants must also be well watered prior to plunging.

Another way is to put the plants in a group, with a bucket of water close by. A piece of lamp wicking connected to the soil in each plant with the water, will ensure enough water to the compost.

To those who have a garden, plunging pots to their rims in the soil, they need to be put into a shady spot as well.

My theory is, we are drawn to the ocean because of a simple, basic fact about humans: We are very curious creatures. Long have we been fascinated by the mystical, as well as observed the strange. So, it's only natural that we are drawn to the sun, sand and surf that seem to call to us.

In this respect, we have always been curious about the natural wonders that lie hidden beneath the sea. Take a moment to notice, that every sea-faring culture in the world has mermaids within their tales. There is also an abundance of jewels from the sea; colorful shells of different shapes and sizes, bits of coral and driftwood, and pearls.

Aside from jewelry, a lot of people like myself find other use for these treasures from the sea. Craftspeople are able to make different items from them; even something as mundane as a picture frame can become quite exquisite when seashells are used in the design. Using them will also give the feeling of being close to the sea. Even though we do not dwell in water, crafts like these make us feel a certain kinship with the ocean somehow.

After making numerous crafted items, craftspeople then showcase their work to the would-be buyers. They do this thru the dozens of craft shows held in Louisiana State. Tips for Indoor Gardeners

It is best to plunge them in a good layer of peat or some similar substance so that the almost inevitable neglect of a day or two will not cause them to dry out and burn away in the heat of the sun. Delicate plants should be given some shading from the hottest rays of the sun. A porch, a shaded frame or even a place in the flower border are all helpful.

As might be expected, these plants tend to suffer through their experiences. They may be in offices or exhibition halls where virtually the only light available to them is artificial. They may suffer neglect through lack of water and extremes of temperature. Certainly the air will lack almost any evidence of humidity. Yet in spite of these difficulties the plants so often (yet not always !) look splendid, decorative and in excellent health. How is this achieved?

In order of light value a south window obviously comes first, although direct sunlight should generally be avoided except for brief periods on all plants other than cacti and succulents. Second come the west windows, third east and last of all the north. Yet all windows are valuable, so do try to use them for your plants.

Where a room is small or narrow a situation opposite a south window can be as helpful as a good west window and as all plants tend to turn their flowers and foliage towards the light, this means that plants in this location look into the room rather than out of the window.

They would, in my opinion, do much better to buy a bright picture for their walls and to decorate their rooms with darker, stronger plants, making use of the decorative shape, the architectural pattern, to gain their effects rather than cling unhappily to the less satisfactory softness and sentimentality of color. Their greater success with their plants will soon compensate for their loss.

On the other hand, let us not dismiss too quickly all possibility of growing colorful plants under poor light conditions. First, it may be possible to move plants closer to a light source, that is, closer to the nearest window. Secondly, it may be possible with minor reorganization to move plants nearer to a south or west window than to the east or north where they normally stand. A light painted wall or a strategically placed mirror or other reflective surface can add substantially to the total quantity of light available, as a light meter will quickly reveal. Any or all of these possibilities should be investigated where there is any doubt about the total quantity of light available. - 19955

How To Do A Ink And Pen Drawing Properly!...

Where to start? Well, you could start by purchasing just an ordinary black pen with a fibre tip. These are stocked in all stationers, art shops etc, they are very cheap, but they will do the job.

Your subject needs to be quite small and detailed, and this pen is both portable and ideal for the job. The pen nib has to be used in two different ways, with, or without, weight on the nib. Raid your garden for your subject, decaying leaves, pebbles or small twigs.

Now you need to create a form and lay a texture. What do we mean by this? You can lay a few dots, lines, dashes, all with more or less pressure giving a rough outline. For example, with your marks close together it will appear darker in intensity. If you want it really dark you can Cross Hatch.

Yes, cross hatching will make parts of your work look very dark. A series of lines is drawn, with another series put over it, going in the opposite direction. If you are doing something, including a curve in the shape, if you make it darker in the pit of the curve and lighter coming out, you can make it appear rounded.

Pens adapt well to both smooth and shiny papers, but a wash will lay better on rougher grained papers.

Now we have reached our choice of paints. Little block water colours, which need to be diluted, could be the answer. Do not make a thick wash or it will obliterate parts of your picture and when white paper is used the light reflects off it.

I personally would recommend that you work with a palette which will hold block watercolours, but yet, can be used for mixing your colours too. It saves valuable time if you have your tools as close as possible. It can help to give a mixed look, if your pen runs into your lines, because it was the water soluble type bought.

Washes are not needed to be particularly accurate. When one colour runs into another, it can often add to the effect and become an advantage. Mistakes with pen and ink are a bit of a problem. It does not work to put more layers of paint on, as the paint itself, you could say, is translucent.

You can sometimes amend your work with a grainy ink rubber, but do wait until your paint is dry. Do not be heavy handed or it will take away the surface and mess the ink and paint up. So remember, a light touch is needed with the rubber. Leave some white, unpainted, areas on your work to give a bit of contrast! - 19955

If one considers foliage plants, vines and succulents to be the best of indoor plants, the plants that feature flowers are the at the top of the list. The flowers one grows in house are well worth up to ten times their weight in beauty and pleasure. As a general consideration, flowering plants are more difficult to cultivate than just the average plant, but the rewards in the end make it extremely worthwhile.

African violets, begonias and geraniums are the standing year-round flower house plants that will all grow well in ones home. Oftentimes, one sees a flowering plant in a floral shop or at a friends home and feels that they should be able to go the same thing at home, only to be met with a bitter result. The chances of this occurs when one has seen a plant that is mature, lush and beautiful, and then in turn it has the advantages of living in a greenhouse environment. These conditions cannot be duplicated in home and we begin to realize the limitations. The ideal thing is to realize the limitations prior to beginning and to work within these limitations. There are many flower plants that can adapt to life outside the greenhouse, these are the best plants to grow.

There are many different varieties of Begonia plants. A complete and varying garden can be grown using only these plants only. There is over 500 different kinds ranging in color, size and shape. There are some that are low growing, some that vine and others that hang. There are also many varieties that do not bloom and are only grown for the leaf appeal.

If all the hybrids that have ever been developed and sold, the amounts would somewhere in the thousands. These plants are some of the most versatile flowering plants to grown and next to the African violet, the most preferred.

Description of a Begonia

Since Begonias come in basically every shape, size and color, it is a bit harder to give an overall simplistic description of the plant that will make any type of sense. Several of the more preferred varieties will give a person a good idea as anything else will, of the broad range the plant entails. Do not be surprised if you are faced with a plant that appears much different from anything else you have seen and are told is a Begonia, the chances are good that it actually is.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Begonias, similar to the African violet, is tropical in origin and as such, demands an environment which is humid, not dry. The best temperature range between 60 and 70F, during the day hours and no lower than 50F in the evening. Sixty degrees is much cooler than most people would keep their home set at, but this does not need to become a problem if the Begonia plants are well humidified and placed away from spots that are exposed to radiant heat or situated near hot water piping.

Begonia plants may either be watered from top or the bottom and the leaves should be misted with water that is room temperature at least once weekly. This demand will increase the humidity exposure around the plant and keep the leaves free of bugs and dust. The Begonia is just another plant which is not very fond of direct sunlight. Placing the plant in an east or west window or location is going to be the ideal setting.

If your plant faces southern exposure, be certain there is a glass curtain to shield the plant from direct sunlight exposure. In the springtime, after the period of frost threat is gone, your Begonias would do best being moved outdoors with most other plants. The Begonias are not happy in a drafty environment either indoors or out, so one needs to make certain to put the plants in an area that is at least partially sheltered from the strong winds. It should also be partially shaded as well, because the plants do not like direct sunlight exposure indoors or outdoors.

Soil Conditions

Begonias will tolerate a wide array of soil types, however using a commercially produced soil will yield the best results and you will save time and trouble in the long run. For this plant it should not be tightly packed, because the roots need aeration. The pots used should provide ample draining holes with a considerable layer of crockery at the bottom of the pot and at least one piece set over the drain hole at the bottom of the smaller one.

What do Begonias eat?

The season of the year in which Begonias go through its growth period will vary with the type of Begonia being grown. This period is quite easy to determine, of course, during this time frame your plant will need extra doses of plant food, which will be used for maximum growth. When it starts to sprout new shoots and leaves, it is time to repot the plant into a larger container. Always read and utilize the label and directions on the food container and do not overfeed or you risk burning the roots up.

Propagation Directions

Depending upon which variety you have, your Begonias can be propagated in any number of different ways, by stem or leaf cutting, dividing and from seeds.

Insects and Sickness

Your plant can be attacked by mites and many other insects, however, if you take the care to wash them completely when they are brought back inside, you should be able to eliminate the problem completely. If your plants suffer from an infestation, treat them as necessary.

Different Varieties

As has been mentioned previously, the number of varieties available for Begonias is in unimaginable figures.

The Wax Begonia

The family is large and the flowers come in shades of red, white or pink. The entire plant is usually less than 12 inches and if it grows much taller, it is more than likely getting inadequate light and should be moved to a lesser shaded location.

The plant flowers all year round and as the flowers begin to fade, you need to pinch them off and then new buds can begin to sprout. You can increase your plant inventory by seed, and stem cutting and root division.

A Beefsteak Begonia

Another typical favorite, this plant has underleaves that are red colored and green on top, with hair along the edges. The plant is handsome enough to be grown for the leaves alone. The flowers are pink and stand high up above the mass of leaves and stem. Stem cutting is the best way to increase plant supplies.

An Angel Wing Begonia

The plant gets its name from the shape of leaves which are large, up to 6 inches long and green colored, with occasional spotting of silver can be seen. The flowers have many hybrids available, all of which are beautiful. To propagate, its best to use seeds.

Star Begonia

This plant is one of the taller Begonias used exclusively in the house and in front yard porches, it can actually grow up to 4 feet in height. The large round leaves and flowers can measure approximately an inch across and have white or pink flowers among the leaves. To propagate best, use stem cuttings. The Begonia Scharffi is another example of a beautiful plant used for exotic landscapes, with pink flower clusters and dark green-red leaves. It is one of the most beautiful in the group.

The Christmas Begonia

There are many hybrids that can be classified under this blanket name. The plants are beautiful in full color, but need greenhouse like conditions to achieve maximum growth. However, if you get one of the them as a gift, do not even waste your time trying to save it from impending doom. Once it dies, simply toss it and enjoy the new pot. - 19955

One of the best things about owning the Cricut Design Studio is that you can collaborate with other users. When a person designs a file, it can saved on their computer. Many will post the file on the internet and allow others to use their designs as well. As you begin browsing other people's work, you will be amazed at the incredible work of these generous and talented Cricut users. Here is a step-by-step guide to downloading and cutting using files from other people.

There are many blogs and sites that have projects posted and the cutting files to make them as well. Each person may store and share their files in a different way. Many use a third party file sharing site, and some have the files hosted right on their website. Most of the files on the Cricut.com message board are saved as a text file and have to be changed before using.

Once you have found a file you would like to use, you need to begin the download process.

1. When you click on the link that they have provided it should take you to the file. If it is hosted on their website, it will ask you have the option to open, save or cancel. If the file is on a file sharing site you need to wait for the download or select "click here to download file" . After you select that link, it will take you to the screen that asks if you want to open, save, or cancel.

2. After you are on the open or save screen, you need to choose save. Before you do, take note of the file directory that is showing and make sure it is the place that you want the file to be saved. You can create a folder specifically for Cricut files if you would like to. If you are going to change the file name, do it at this point. Select save to start saving the file on your computer.

Now the file is on your computer and you can open it from inside the Cricut Design Studio program. Next you need to follow these easy steps to cut a saved design.

1. Start the Cricut Design Studio program. Choose the "file" drop down menu in the left corner and then choose "open".

2. After selecting "open" a screen will come up that shows cut files that have been saved in the "my projects" folder. These are files of your own that you have created. To find the file that was downloaded and saved, locate the folder you saved it in by selecting it in the "look in" area.

3. Find the file you want to open and click the open button. It will bring up the file that you downloaded and open it inside of your software. If you want to cut it as it is, load the paper and select the scissors to cut. You can also change the file and add to it if you would like, but make sure you always give credit where credit is due and never claim a design unless you designed the file from the beginning.

Start browsing other people's designs and projects and you will find more ideas and files than you can cut. Some plants can be grown without daylight, using only sufficient artificial light and in a really dark corner this is a real possibility. For a single plant a bulb of 100 watts should be used, no further than four feet from the plant and no nearer than two, because of the risk of burning from the heat generated.

Fortunately we have plenty of space, so plans have been drawn up for a very special kind of conservatory and we merely have to wait until we can afford it. It will extend to the south from our main building by a short corridor and will stand over what we call a ' canal ', actually a long strip of water. The sides will go clown into the water surface, the glass walls forming a seal against droughts by this means.

If they are heated during the day a great deal of this heat is wasted and it is therefore an expensive thing to do. For only an extra day or so it is possible, depending on the size of the building of course, to install double glazed windows and insulated walls and roof. This cuts down very significantly on the size of the heating bills, reduces heat losses at night and adds to the general comfort and convenience.

The structure will be heated during the colder months by thermostatically controlled electric heaters and ventilation during the summer will be by automatically controlled vents.

Curtains should be installed, preferably for all windows, but certainly for those windows that face the south, otherwise the room can heat up to dangerous levels during the hottest months of the year.

I well remember a recent holiday in Switzerland during the winter. We were fortunate enough to obtain the use of a fiat in Davos and attached to this was a glassed-in sun balcony, large enough for a single bed and a few chairs. - 19955

Mayhaw Fruits

So, what is mayhaw? If you're not a wildlife buff, you wouldn't have a lamb's idea what a mayhaw is, technically speaking. They taste putrid, but darn it, those little things make for some good jelly. And I ain't bluffing about it.

I came across this particular jelly when a neighbor brought some back from her trip across Texas. Said it was good 'pikin' since these bottles don't come often. Most of the folks don't have an idea how to make jelly, much more mayhaw jelly. Well, what in tarnation is a mayhaw?

Mayhaws are fruits (they are) about an inch big. It's red or yellow when ripe, but darn it, does it taste foul when eaten raw. They're harvested from the middle of April through May, growing in trees. The trees reach at least 20 or 30 feet, often found in low, wetlands, on usually acidic soil. They excel well in soil found upland though, an irony in most cases.

These trees used to grow in the marshes, sloughs, swamps and in rivers. Harvesting was hard, and had to use boats in order to have access to the fruits. It was an informal ritual to harvest mayhaws during early spring till summer. The ritual does not leave you unrewarded though. The rewards for the deserving are the bucket loads of fruits that fall off the tree, right into your boat or your nets.

Mayhaw may suck in the fruit category, but they make one of the most heavenly jams. The taste is uniquely divine, inspired by at least three or four flavors most Americans would be aware of. It is a southern delicacy, a preserved ambrosia, a jam of ages. Well, putting it bluntly, it tastes good and I'd be willing to spend my bottom dollar so I could get myself one bottle of it. - 19955

The answer to real enthusiasts faced with any or even all of these drawbacks is to experiment with plants until the types are found which will tolerate the poor conditions. In future pages some indication will be given of plants that will stand domestic gas in 'the atmosphere, poor light conditions, cold, dryness or any other factor which will inhibit the healthy growth of certain other plants.

This is, of course, stretching the definition to its farthest range and although it gives some idea of the scope of house plants and the activity of indoor gardening, it will be more helpful to be somewhat more precise.

The range of house plants for indoor gardening, then, is just as wide as you care to make it. Some indoor gardeners will be sufficiently skilled or sensitive to be able to grow permanent plants for so long that they must eventually be discarded mainly because their size makes them no longer practical, and will be able to maintain temporary plants in splendid condition for surprisingly long periods.

The permanent plants are those that will live indoors under normal home conditions for long periods and the temporary plants are those which can be brought indoors from garden, store or greenhouse and will live or look their best only for a limited period, either because of their nature or because they will not tolerate home conditions for long.

If I may be personal for a moment, my own resident house plant population in my country home with its clean air, large double glazed windows and central heating, varies from about 5o to loo plants, depending upon season, for some plants go outdoors or in frames during the milder months. Some of these plants are in south windows, some in north.

Some of the temporary plants must be treated like a bunch of cut flowers and thrown out when they have passed their best, but others can be planted out in the garden where they will recover and flower again next year, or perhaps given a convalescent period in a greenhouse to bring them back to splendor. - 19955

This plant material, some of it highly exotic and unusual, can be brought into the home for special occasions or when at its best, and then returned after a few days to rest, recuperate and recover from the brief spell in the wilderness.

The new conservatory should be designed so that it joins the south to west side of the house. It should be protected by masonry or plants to some degree from prevailing winds, particularly if these should be from the north or cast. It should have one door to the garden and one door to the house interior, either or both of which can be open on warm and windless clays, but both of which should be closed during the winter to allow the correct temperatures and relative humidities to be maintained.

Shelving can extend around the entire circumference of the conservatory to allow for the greatest number of plants to be installed. A small central portion of the floor can be left clear to allow for a few chairs, but the centre should also allow of the erection of an island site for plants.

Some plants which grow particularly tall or wide should have space allocated to them on the floor instead of on the staging so that they may grow to their fullest possible height or width. Under the central island site it may be possible to construct a pool or reservoir.

Seeds can be raised, new plants grown from cuttings or layers. There's a host of ideas and abilities newly available with such an attractive addition to the house. - 19955

The Importance of Watering Your Houseplants

Experience is the best guide to watering requirements, but experience can be expensive.

Follow these basic rules and as a general rule for most plants you will not go wrong. Never water any plant where the soil surface appears to be moist.

Other plants with this obliging habit are coleus, oleander, primulas and to a lesser extent the Stag's Horn fern, Platycerium bifurcatum and several of the vines such as cissus, rhoicissus and tetrastigma.

Most plants, unfortunately, give us no such signal, and indeed some, such as the rubber plant, exhibit the same symptoms if they are either over or underwatered : the lower leaves begin to turn yellow and then drop off. By the time these symptoms are seen, recognized and acted upon, it is too late and the majority of the leaves will then fall as a result of this neglect. Other plants, such as the chlorophytum, merely turn brown and wither at the tips of their leaves and attention to watering will prevent further leaf- tip browning if it will not cure earlier damage.

At one time it was recommended that water requirements be ascertained by tapping or knocking the pot with the knuckles or by some such implement as a cotton reel on the end of a cane.

The theory was that a dull thud would indicate the presence of sufficient moisture and a sharper or ringing note would suggest that water was needed. But this depended on the plant being potted in a terracotta or earthenware pot. Plastic does not respond in the same manner, so this method is no longer applicable. - 19955

Watering means life or death to a plant

Water is essential to all forms of life. No life can exist without moisture. Food, warmth and light are all less important than water, and just as humans can live longer without food than they can without water, so can plants.

The replenishment of the air around the roots of a plant is essential because these pore spaces become filled with carbon dioxide breathed out by the roots and this must be dis-placed with the oxygen present in the air above the plant. The carbon dioxide is a poisonous gas (although I hasten to reassure you that the minute amounts released into our homes by plants could under no circumstances be of any harm to humans) and can achieve high concentrations in a comparatively short space of time.

On a hot, sunny day, the quantity of carbon dioxide around the roots of a plant can increase tenfold in a single day and this is frequently the cause of the wilting that we see under these conditions.

The plant is then removed and placed to drain. Water will swiftly course out of the hole in the base of the pot and as this rushes away oxygen is sucked into the pot and quickly fills the vacated pores.

So obviously a tiny trickle of water into the pot will have no real and lasting effect, for it does not help to get rid of this excess carbon dioxide. And by overwatering the healthy oxygen is denied any possibility of coming into contact with the roots as the spaces are either filled with water or with the constantly out- coming carbon dioxide.

With these facts in mind it will be apparent that the daily splash of water on the top of the pot will do no more than discolour the soil surface. - 19955

Rotting roots is a common type of problem with plants that are victim of over watering. Some forms of rot are the result of fungi that grow as a result of over water. The excess moisture aids the growth of bacteria found in the soil that already live in the soil and can be beneficial in small amounts. Once they get to a certain size, the attack the roots and they get transported up into the body of the plant and the leaves. This can quickly kill even the healthiest plant.

Be careful not to overdo the mix concentration or over spraying. You do not want to clog the leave pores, this is how a plant breathes. They breathe in carbon dioxide and exert oxygen into the air through these pores.
